
Peter Carey was born in Rangoon, Burma, on April 30, 1948. After completing his education in England, he earned a Bachelor’s degree in History with First-Class Honours from Trinity College, Oxford (1969), and pursued postgraduate studies at Cornell University, USA, where he began focusing on Southeast Asian studies, particularly Indonesia. He served as a Fellow at Magdalen College and later as a lecturer and tutor at Trinity College, Oxford (1979–2008). His research interests include the modern history and politics of Indonesia, Burma (Myanmar), and Timor-Leste. His major works include Kuasa Ramalan: Pangeran Diponegoro dan Akhir Tatanan Lama di Jawa (The Power of Prophecy: Prince Diponegoro and the End of an Old Order in Java) and Destiny: The Life of Prince Diponegoro. He has also written extensively on Timor-Leste and Myanmar. Since 2008, he has been a Fellow Emeritus of Trinity College, Oxford, and between 2013–2023, he taught at the University of Indonesia. His international recognitions include Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE, 2010) and the Ordem de Timor-Leste (2025).
