Bastian Zulyeno was born in Bagan Siapi-Api on July 19, 1981. After completing his secondary education at Gontor Islamic Boarding School (1999), he pursued his undergraduate studies at the Faculty of Adab and Humanities, Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University (UIN) Jakarta, graduating in 2004. He later obtained his Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Persian Literature from the University of Tehran, Iran, becoming the first Indonesian to earn a Ph.D. in Persian Studies from that university (2012). Since 2015, he has served as a faculty member in the Arabic Studies Program, Faculty of Humanities, Universitas Indonesia (FIB-UI), and between 2021–2025, he has held the position of Head of the Arabic Literature Study Program at the same faculty. His doctoral dissertation, titled “The Translation from Malay Text to Persian of Taj al Salatin, a Book by Bukharie el Jauhari from the Seventeenth Century A.D., and Its Comparison with Siyasat Name by Khauje Nizam al Mulk al Thousi” (in Persian), explores cross-cultural literary transmission between the Malay and Persian worlds. He has conducted extensive research and produced numerous academic works and translations, particularly in the field of literature. In 2018, his research project titled “Identity and Cultural Representation of Persia in Ancient Cemeteries in Barus and North Aceh” received recognition from the Faculty of Humanities, Universitas Indonesia, as the Best Research in the Cluster Category.
