
Khairil Anwar, S.S. is an archaeologist and cultural officer (Pamong Budaya) at the Gresik Regency Government, East Java. A graduate of the Archaeology Department, Faculty of Letters, Udayana University (1998), he has been actively involved in numerous archaeological and maritime heritage studies in Java and its surrounding islands. His research focuses on Bawean Island and the historical port city of Gresik—key nodes in Indonesia’s maritime trade and spice routes. Collaborating with institutions such as the Yogyakarta Archaeological Center and BRIN, he has contributed to projects on the development of Gresik’s harbor, prehistoric stone tools from Bawean, and the island’s role in the Java Sea trade network. His works highlight the cultural and historical significance of small islands in shaping Indonesia’s maritime civilization.
